Celebrating Advent

Advent is a special time. It's a time of waiting for Jesus. A time to prepare our hearts for his coming. It's a time of longing and expectation.

Unfortunately it's also a time of stress, busyness, and distraction. It's so easy to fill the weeks leading up to Christmas with presents to buy, cards to send, cookies to bake, and parties to go to, that we forget the real meaning of this wonderful holiday.

Laura dolled up four dollar store pillar candles with doilies that she spray painted gold, to light each week. I love the idea of lighting the candles on Sunday and taking time to slow down and reflect on the real meaning of Christmas.

Adam and I are going through a daily Advent devotional from SheReadsTruth. We've only done 2 days, but I'm loving it! We try to read the scripture and short devotional in the morning. I'd love for this to be a tradition that we do with our kids!

The Christmas story is so much bigger than Jesus being born in a manger. It's a perfect picture of love. It's about God, sending his son, Jesus, to save us. It's about love. It's about redemption. It's about us.

The scripture we read at church for the first week of advent was 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13. Not your typical Christmas reading. But I love verse 12: "May the Lord make your love grow. May it be like a rising flood. May your love for one another increase."

What would it look like if our love was like a rising flood? When I think of a flood, I think of something that is overflowing. Something that can't be contained. Isn't that what love should look like?

What are your Advent traditions?
