Becoming One: Brown Sugar Toast

by Andrea Cooley

I love starting the week with a little encouragement and insight into what makes someone else's marriage work. Today I'm so excited to introduce you to Christa of Brown Sugar Toast! If you don't already read her blog, you should. She has two adorable kids and a great husband who supports her decorating ideas–isn't that what we all want?

brick duct tapeHow cute are Christa and her husband? I think one sign of a healthy marriage is being able to joke around and have fun together. From the picture above, it's obvious that these two are jokesters! And from the picture below, they are still very much in love.

vadim pelihati photog5 When did you get married?
June 6, 2008 <— best day ever!

How long did you date before getting married?
2 1/2 years off and on (I broke up with him halfway through and then, thankfully, we got back together once I realized he was the only one for me!)

What was one of your biggest challenges the first few months of marriage?
Resolving conflicts. I never wanted to talk through problems. Jonathan always did. Helllloooo friction!

What was something you wish you’d known before the wedding?
Marriage (like every other part of life) is all about God. It's a tool He wants to use to make me more like Jesus. So every hardship that comes along in marriage is not really about me or my spouse – it's all about coming to a closer relationship with Christ.

What have you learned since you’ve been married?
Talk, talk, talk with each other. All the time. About pretty much everything. Resolve conflicts as soon as you possibly can. The longer you let it go, the bigger it grows.

What's your secret to a happy marriage?
Stay close to Jesus – both individually and as a couple. He's the one who created marriage and the only One who can keep yours together!

What’s the best part about being married?
My husband! Seriously. There is nobody else I'd rather go through life with (both the fun and tough times).
