{31 days of Capturing the Spark Day 16} Becoming One: Laura & Cody

by laura.johnson

When did you get married?

Cody and I got married July 11, 2009.  It was only after the wedding did we realize the best wedding date ever! Each year we get to celebrate with free Slurpees from 7-11!  Feel free to join us in our celebration next year!

How long did you date?

About a year and half total; 6 months dating long distance, knowing we couldn’t continue the relationship any further, I packed up and moved east.  Cody proposed 8 months later, we had a whirlwind engagement (only 3 months) and wed that summer.

What was one of your biggest challenges during the first few months of marriage?

The combining of stuff completely overwhelmed me! We had 5 lbs of flour, 3 lbs of sugar, at least 6 boxes of ziplock bags oh vey!

We decided that after we were married we’d live in Cody’s studio apartment.  It was a beautiful place, that got lots of sunshine, and while it was a perfect newlywed apartment it is always a challenge adding anther person into a small space.  There were many afternoons I had to stop myself from bursting into tears and declaring, ‘there is no room for me here!’

Then the ceiling fell in, no really the bathroom ceiling came down!  Long story short the building manager allowed us to move around to corner into our pretty little 1 bedroom apartment we have now.  I was so thrilled that we had a whole room just for a bed, fancy!

What have you learned since you’ve been married?

How perfect Cody is for me. (pause for collective groan)  We spent much of our dating time evaluating life’s big questions and making sure we were ‘right’ for one another.  However, it was only after we were married that the little day-to-day preferences came out, each one a pleasant surprise and reassurance of the mate God had for me.

What’s the best part about being married?

Coming home to someone that is excited to see you.  I don’t often appreciate this enough, but it is wonderful to walk into a warm inviting home.  That and waking up to coffee already made, humm what a way to start the morning!

What’s your secret to keeping the spark alive after the honeymoon?

I’ve shared most of them with you already, but wearing minimal clothing goes a long way to creating a little spark!
