Adam and I do a lot of things together. We laugh, travel, play games, and do projects around the house. That’s all fine and good, but I believe God has called us to more than just living together! He has called us to serve together! This will look different for every couple. The important thing is that you find something you can do together.
We’ve served in a couple different ways over the years from helping with vacation Bible school and taking meals to families when they have a new baby to leading a small group and packing lunches, but working together in the nursery is probably one of my favorite ways to serve together.
Recently we were working in the newborn to 24-month-old room. It was the two of us versus 4 or 5 munchkins. I like to think that I know what I’m doing with kids. I didn’t babysit my way through high school for nothing! But a 2 of the kids seemed to be taking turns having tantrums. They did NOT want to be there! No amount of consoling would change their mind. I’m sure I’ll feel differently when I have my own kids, but after about 5 minutes of screaming, I was over it. I knew nothing was wrong with them, they just didn’t want to be with us!
This is when Adam really stepped up. He held one little girl, rocking and bouncing and singing until she fell asleep! He was so patient and calm. He’s going to be an awesome dad!
I tell this story for two reasons. One, I had to ask Adam to work in the nursery with me. Not that Adam didn’t want to do it, but he probably wouldn’t have signed up to do it on his own. But when I asked, he was more than willing to join me. So, if you’re reading this and thinking your husband would never work in the nursery, ask him! I can’t promise he’ll say yes, but you don’t know if you don’t try. The second reason, is that serving in the nursery was out of Adam’s comfort zone when we started, but look how well he did! I need to remember this when he suggests we do something that I may not be thrilled with at first glance.
There are lots of great marriages in the Bible, but Priscilla and Aquila are a great example of a Godly couple serving together. The Apostle Paul mentions them several times and every time he mentions them it is as a couple (see Acts 18 and Romans 16:3-4). I love the idea of others thinking of Adam and I as a unit. Together we can do so much more!
