{31 Days of Capturing the Spark Day 27} Cooking up Romance

by Andrea Cooley

I do most of the cooking in our house. Part of it is because I also do the grocery shopping, so I know what we have in the cupboards and the fridge at any given time and have an idea of what we could make. But if I’m honest, I do the cooking because I’m a little bit of a control freak. There. I said it! Adam doesn’t always do things the way I would, and that means I don’t often give him the chance to cook in “my kitchen.”

A few weeks ago Adam wanted to go out to eat, but I insisted we stay home. I think I offered up eggs or grilled cheese as options. He was craving Mexican, which sounded great, but it was a Sunday night and the last thing I wanted to do was be in the kitchen for 45 minutes cooking. He asked if we had chicken and tortillas so he could make enchiladas. A quick dig through the fridge and pantry and we found frozen chicken, tomatoes with chiles, tortillas, and cheese.

Before I knew it, I was out of the kitchen, and Adam had taken the reigns. He was chopping and boiling, stuffing and baking to his heart’s content! The best part was while he was cooking, he was also serenading me with silly songs. It was quite entertaining! And the best part was, I wasn’t cooking! He ended up making some of the best enchiladas we’ve ever had—even better than if we’d gone out to eat!

So even if he didn’t use the pans or dishes I would have used or cooked things differently, it didn’t matter. He was serving me! And there’s nothing like a delicious, spicy meal to add some spark to your marriage!

  1. I would say in our house, it’s in fits and spurts. Depending on the season of bus-y-ness at school for Gerard, I cook or if I haven’t had the time to think ahead enough to thaw something out, Gerard will cook. He used to take all the reigns but now it’s much closer to 50-50.

  2. I definitely do most of the cooking, but Thor is always willing if I give him advance notice. He’s the more creative cook for sure which means we get to try all kinds of interesting concoctions if he’s the chef. I do all the grocery shopping too which he says makes it harder for him to cook because he doesn’t know what he has to work with (and doesn’t want to use something I’ve already planned to use in another meal).
