Becoming One: Dave and Sarah

by Andrea Cooley

It's time for another peek into someone else's marriage. Dave and Sarah are worship leaders and all around awesome people at our church (Adam and I love playing with their kids in the nursery). They blog about feeding their family discovering awesome food over at 1 Cup Awesome (whenever there is a church potluck, I always make sure to find whatever it is they brought!) If you missed my post about my 5 favorite recipes from their blog, check it out here.

Enough about food, here's a how their marriage works (and it involves ice cream!)

When did you get married?
May 22, 2004

How long did you date before getting married?
14 months total. We dated for seven months and were engaged for seven months. It was kind of "love at first sight," so we were ready.

What was one of your biggest challenges in the first few months of marriage?
The biggest challenge when we first got married was simply the fact that we were 20-years-old. We knew we were young, but we were ready to get married. Most 20-year-olds still have their parents paying for things like insurance and cell phones. We had to learn how to be adults and be married all at the same time.

What was one thing you wish you'd known before the wedding?
How to effectively communicate with each other. We know that is kind of the "standard" answer, but it is so true. We can't read each other's minds, so we need to tell each other what we are thinking and feeling. We hardly ever argue, but when we do, it is usually due to poor communication…or being tired. Three kids under the age of five makes you tired.

What have you learned since you've been married?
Eating Velveeta shells and cheese and hot dogs three times a week is a not good for your body. We learned that lesson the hard way in our first year of marriage. Also, that we are incredibly blessed in so many ways.  We could look at our lives and just see chaos and hardship, but instead we have learned to see peace and freedom and all the blessings God has given us.

What's the best part about being married?
For us, the best part about being married is that we get to share our journey through life together. We don't really have separate hobbies, so everything in our lives that we love, we get to experience together. We get to cook together, shop together, watch the same TV shows, and lead worship at our church. Most importantly, we get to watch our three kids grow up. Also, we eat ice cream together almost every single night. That's the secret to a happy marriage.
