Buy or DIY? Holiday Decorating Edition

by Andrea Cooley

My list of Christmas decorations and projects I’d like to make is long. I’ve checked a few off the list (an advent calendar, evergreen swag and paper chain garland) and I’m still working on a felt ball wreath. It’s one of those projects that has grown to be more complicated than I thought it would be and is probably going to end up costing as much as if I had bought the wreath that inspired it!

If I had all the time in the world I would do them all. But that’s not possible. So here are some projects to either buy or DIY. You can check out more holiday crafts on my Pinterest board.

DIY felt trees

These scalloped felt trees from Land of Nod are so sweet! But the knock-off version from Jewels At Home looks pretty simple. What do you think?

DIY burlap trees

Burlap is the perfect material for rustic Christmas decorations. These burlap trees from West Elm are sold out, so if you want them, your best bet is to make them with this tutorial from Top This Top That.

DIY bottle brush trees

Bottle brush trees are a classic. Here’s an option from Garnet Hill and an easy DIY version from A Beautiful Mess.

pennant garland

It looks like the felt pennant garland from West Elm is on sale for $13, but it would be super easy to make! Here’s a tutorial from Family Bees. You could totally keep it out all year.

West elm felt ball wreath

If all goes according to plan, I will finish my version of the West Elm felt ball wreath (I underestimated the number of felt balls I needed and had to order more and of course they are on backorder…) next week! Pictures to come, I promise :)

Do you usually buy or DIY your holiday decorations?
