Complimenting your husband

by Andrea Cooley

compliment your husbandEverybody likes to hear how great they are. Words of affirmation is one of Adam's love languages. I know how much it means to him when I praise him for things he does and who he is. That doesn't mean I treat him like a kid and I tell him "good job" for eating his vegetables or taking out the trash, but it does mean that I make it a point to recognize when he goes out of his way to help me with the dishes or gets up early with Emerson.

I hate to admit it, but it's easy to get into a relationship rut and only talk about work, kids, and chores. I want to make a habit of building Adam up with my words every day. I do this by taking time to pray with him every day, sending him cute text  messages or voicemails during the day, and paying attention when he has something to say (instead of checking instagram or email on my phone).

Even if words of affirmation aren't one of your husband's primary love languages, I think every guy likes to be recognized for what they do! I love this list of 10 compliments for your husband from Family Share.

When I first read the list, I thought none of the compliments are groundbreaking, but I also realized that I couldn't remember the last time I had said most of these things to Adam. It's easy to assume that he knows that I love it that he makes me laugh and that I think he's pretty cute, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like to hear me say it! And telling him that I appreciate how hard he works to provide for our family is something I know I definitely know I could tell him more. Instead of complaining that he's late getting home or has to send last minute emails when it's the weekend, I want to make sure he knows I recognize the work he does!

I also think it's important to compliment your husband when he isn't around. By this I mean you should brag about him to your friends! It's easy to complain about our husbands when we're spending time with the girls, but that doesn't encourage or uplift any of us. Think how much more powerful your words of praise are. And if he should happen to hear you praising him behind his back, how great is that?

How do you compliment your husband?

  1. You're right, none of the compliments are especially ground-breaking, but all are much needed. Thanks for this reminder. We all have love languages, but words of affirmation are important regardless of love language.

  2. Great reminders!  I am definitely working on complimenting my husband more in public!
