Day 1 Tips and Tricks: Hanging Curtains

by Andrea Cooley

We are excited to start our 2nd annual 31 Days Challenge with The Nester! Last year we wrote about Capturing the Spark in Marriage during the month of October and this year we’re going to be sharing tips and tricks for decorating, marriage, and life! Like we said last week, life is a little crazier for both of us this year, so if we don’t post every single day, we hope you’ll give us a little grace!

If you’re joining us for the first time, welcome! Leave a comment and if you’re part of the 31 Day Challenge include a link to your blog. We’d love to meet you!

And now for our first trick!

Does anyone else think hanging curtain rods (or really anything for that matter) is hard? When Adam and I hung the curtains in the living room last fall it seemed like that was more stressful than picking out the fabric and sewing the curtains combined! All that measuring and making sure they were level was a lot of work!

So when I saw this tip for hanging curtains from Miss Mustard Seed on Pinterest, I knew I had to give it a try when we hung the curtains in the baby room (and yes, SOON you will get to see the whole room, we’re still putting the finishing touches on it!)

Best way to hang curtain rodsAll you do is create an “L” shaped template out of cardboard (we have plenty of boxes laying around from all the furniture we’ve been putting together). Then hold it up to the corner of the window.

Tips & Tricks for hanging curtainsThen hold your hardware up to the cardboard and mark where you want to drill the holes.

Tips & Tricks for hanging curtainsThen you just drill through the cardboard! Once you have the template all you have to do is flip it over for the other side of the window and repeat on the other windows. No measuring required! Adam said it was tons easier than measuring each window (he’s in charge of all projects requiring a ladder these days).

Tips for hanging curtainsTada! Seriously, I’ll never hang a curtain rod without this trick again! And what do you think of the curtains? I think they look pretty good!

Maybe this will help us get some curtains up in our house. We've only been here over a year, so it's not like we're rushing it or anything. 😉
