Adam and I love having people over. It's not so much that we love "entertaining", that sounds too formal. It's more that we feel like one of the reasons God has blessed us with the house we have is to use it to serve others. What better way to do that than to open our doors and welcome others into our home?
Here are my "rules" for easy entertaining:
1. Repeat after me: It's OK for people to come over if your house isn't perfectly clean.
Seriously! Say it again. It's OK for people to come over if your house isn't perfectly clean.
Doesn't that take a load off your shoulders?
This doesn't mean that there aren't times that I don't run around the house like a crazy woman in the 5-10 minutes before people come over, shoving laundry baskets in the bedroom and clearing off the coffee table, but I'm not going to let a floor that needs vacuumed or a dusty table keep us from having someone over!
2. Keep a stash of paper plates, cups, and napkins on hand. Then you don't have to do as many dishes and it doesn't matter if your dishwasher is full of dirty dishes! I try to stock up whenever they're on sale. That means that sometimes we're using Christmas napkins in February, but I don't think anyone really cares, right?
Ashley, over at Domestic Fashionista is blogging for 31 days about Creative Homemaking. She has a great post about entertaining supplies and where she stores everything. That girl knows how to throw a party! The best part is, she makes it look easy. I can definitely learn a thing or two from her!
3. You don't have to do all the cooking! It's so much easier to have people over if you let them bring food. Most people ask if they can bring anything. Take them up on the offer!
