My secret cleaning weapon

by Andrea Cooley

Did that title make you curious? My “secret” cleaning weapon probably isn’t such a secret, but if you haven’t tried it, you should!

Any guesses what it is? And no, it’s not Adam (though he is pretty good at scrubbing things when he sets his mind to it, that just doesn’t happen very often).

It’s baking soda!
Full disclosure: We’ve lived in our house almost 2 years and NEVER cleaned the stove. Please don’t judge us! Well, a few weeks ago a pot of soup boiled over one too many times and I couldn’t take it anymore. It was actually Adam’s idea to clean the stove, which is proof of how bad it was!

I can’t believe I’m posting this picture for the world to see, but here is our stove top in all its dirtiness. Enter the secret cleaning weapon: baking soda! While Adam scrubbed away at the burners, I sprinkled baking soda and a little water on the stove. It wasn’t fun, but it did the job! And the sparkling white stove top was well worth it!

Now isn’t that better! I hate to admit it, but we actually did this on a Friday night. We aren’t usually such duds, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, right? To celebrate our clean stove we treated ourselves to dinner at Panera, because we’re classy like that :)
The stove is still pretty clean, but unfortunately the rice has already boiled over at least once. I hate it when that happens!

Confession time: What’s your least favorite thing to clean in the house? Does anyone have any secret weapons of their own to share? We can use all the help we can get!

  1. Well, considering we’ve lived in our house for 4 years and haven’t cleaned the oven since we did when we first moved in, I guess it’s time…and that would be my least favorite thing because you have to stand on your head to do it! It will be a great exercise for my gag reflex…can I use baking soda for that too?

    • Confession, I’ve never cleaned the inside of our oven, guess that’s the next thing on the list! I think you can use baking soda there too, but I’d google it!

  2. White vinegar is also a magical cleaning friend :) burnt gunk on a pan? Soak it in vinegar. Streaky mirror? Wipe it with vinegar. There are a million and one uses for it.

  3. Behind and under our oven. No one notices, but I do and it feels so so good to give it a good scrub. (I should also add I’ve done it only twice in 6 years!)

  4. I passionately hate cleaning the bathtub, in part because I feel like no matter how much scrubbing I do, it is still stained slightly blue from a paint roller I rinsed off one fateful day two and a half years ago. I might try baking soda, but Comet has gotten me nowhere…
