This is the time of year when all my home-owning friends are plotting their gardens, researching soil constitution, and checking out all the latest gardening books from the library. All this excitement and planning makes me want to join in the fun, after all, who wouldn’t want fresh tomatoes, zucchini, green beans?
But the reality is, I live in a small apartment on the 5th floor. While the options for citified gardening are definitely taking root, (gotta love puns) with nearby community gardens and the possibility even of a tenant garden in our courtyard, I know the likelihood of me trekking the 102 stairs to water, weed, and harvest my well plotted produce was slim to nil.
So I’ve turned to container gardening and used my small windowsills as my own little plot of land. I’m constantly adding and changing what plants we have, but in the last year and a half we’ve had everything a good kitchen garden needs: chives, thyme, mint, rosemary, and of course, my favorite basil. I just love being able to clip chives for our morning eggs and of course fresh basil makes anything taste better!
Now a recent visit to a garden guru friend has me contemplating air plants, mother in-law’s tongue, and even some sweet-smelling indoor plants. Hummm I might need to take a trip to Lowe’s this weekend for a brainstorming session.
