Sponsored Post: In the Garden with Duluth Trading Co. & $50 Give Away

by laura.johnson

Now that our May blizzard has come and gone I was excited to get out in the garden again. In all honesty that excitement might have been spurred on by a little package that arrived from some dear friends.

We were asked to take part in their Summer Solved event and test a few of their newer products as we tackled projects around our house. I was excited about the SPF protective fabrics, that stuff is gold to this fair skinned gal!

After Cody got off work I grabbed my seed packets and garden tools, he grabbed a baby and a blanket and we all went out the garden for a nice night out on the lawn. I love working alongside them, taking breaks to laugh at their antics, seriously does life get any better than this?

I had a few more seeds to get in the ground plus, I wanted to spend some time to assess any snow damage that the last few days might have brought.I loosened the soil again and made nice straight-ish rows for the areas I would be planting seeds and got to work planting. Duluth Trading Co. sent a pair of capris from their Heirloom Gardening collection to try out. At first I was a little unsure about the fit, they sit at your natural waist, which is higher than I'm used to. But the extra length was much appreciated when it came to constantly bending over in the garden!

They also sent a no-sweat tank. Speaking of much appreciated, I love having a little pocket for my seeds, it's just so handy! I feel a little like old Johnny Appleseed reaching into my side pocket for seedlings.I was able to get my green bean, zinnia, and morning glory seeds in the ground and even had time to plant a ring of marigolds around the lettuce/herb patch. It's hard to believe that just a few days ago this was all covered in snow! Speaking of that unwelcome white stuff, all in all the damage at this point seems minimal. I've been assured by many a veteran gardener that the seeds should be fine, but it looks like the herbs got a little bit of frost bite. This guy was hit the worst and even he has quite a few viable stems left on him. So we will see in a few weeks as little green buds start popping up what good produce we have to look forward to this summer!

Of course ever willing to help Lydia offered to do a little product testing too. I grabbed the DTC tank on the way out the door for an afternoon 'walk till the baby falls asleep' excursion. (it was one of those days) Because we were walking in the heat of the day when the sun is at its strongest I was relieved to have the added SPF protection for her. The tank was great for covering her limbs that peek out from the stroller’s sun shade and the lightweight material kept her cool even on an 80 degree day.

sleeping baby with SPF tankA sleeping baby equals happy mama. It was 3.5 miles of pure bliss for both of us!

  1. WORK IT!!

Our latest project is working on our lawn & flower beds for the spring. Indoors we just bought a new couch, mounted the TV on a different wall and re-arranged the whole family room. I need to hang art now!

  2. Work it!! Our latest project(s) includes all things "nesting"! Deep cleaning and purging items we no longer use, but also making our yard more presentable with a face lift to our landscaping. We'll see how much we get done before Baby arrives!

  3. Work it! My latest home project is planting the summer garden for our 4 kids. They love peas  and cucumbers and sweet little strawberries, I love cherry tomatoes and zucchini on the grill.   Those SPF shirts look awesome! I may need to buy some.

  4. WORK IT!! love gardens…our latest house project will be planting some veggies in pots to transplant, since we don't move into our house until June and then that's when the real fun projects will begin! Like a porch on our flat roof above the garage, planting, painting, you know all those fun move in projects :)

  5. WORK IT!!  While I'm waiting to get outside, I'm painting the grandsons' room.  Yike!! Can I have it done before they visit this week end?  The runabout knit skort looks like it would be comphy yet durable for work.

  6. WORK IT: Thor and I were like crazy mad productive people last weekend and cleaned out the garage (though he still will not get rid of any of the scrap wood that he swears will come in handy sometime…), and I cleaned out our seriously muddy and covered with dried up worm bodies 3 seasons porch floor and put out the summer furniture, rug, plants, books, etc… to make it a place to enjoy ice cream in the evenings.

Work it! My indoor home project has been going through about 20 years of saved from magazines, etc. recipes and determining which ones are "healthy and low calorie". If they pass that criteria, I decide whether I really would ever make it. Next I make two copies and put them in clear page protectors. One set will stay in Iowa, the other will go to the cabin. A binder with tabbed dividers for Salads, Sides, Main Dishes, etc. seems to be a much better way to organize them than tossed in a bottom kitchen drawer and rarely unearthed.!  After all initially I saved it because the recipe sounded YUMMY! I'm just about done so I can get outside to spread the mulch in the perennial beds and enjoy Spring.

  11. I've been to Duluth Trading Company and loved it, almost as much as I loved Laura's garden. Sign me up for the $50 gift certificate! Thanks.
