Summer fireplace decorating

I wish this is what my fireplace looked like! It’s like a work of art! Unfortunately, most of the year our fireplace isn’t much to look at. On the rare occasion we have a fire in it, I love it. But for the other 360 days of the year, it’s pretty much a big, black hole in our living room. I don’t love the screen (it came with the house) but when I took away the screen it wasn’t much better. Just a sooty, dusty hole.

I’ve seen lots of pictures of fireplaces filled with pretty birch logs, stacks of books, or candles. Last weekend I couldn’t take it anymore. I hadn’t planned on making over the fireplace, but on a whim I pulled out the vacuum and sucked up all the dust and ashes and put the log rack and screen in our junk room. Does anyone else randomly start projects when they should be cooking dinner?

Once everything was out of the fireplace, I realized if I wanted to do things right, I should probably paint the inside black, but that would mean a trip to the hardware store and that wasn’t going to happen (we had to eat dinner at some point!). I had an old mirror and some candles in a closet and started arranging. I wish I had taken a picture of the first arrangement. The mirror was propped up in the back and the candles were sitting in front of it. I knew it didn’t look right, but I didn’t know what else to do. When Adam saw it, he said it looked like we had a shrine in our living room! Definitely not what I was going for!

Laura happened to be in town that weekend, and it was her idea to lay the mirror on the ground and put the candles on top of it. Since she was here I got a few more white candles to fill it out. What do you think? Seeing this picture, the candles look miniature in the firebox, so you’ll have to take my word that from where I’m sitting on the couch they look better!

Note to self: taking a picture into a black hole with a mirror is never going to look good!

Maybe I’ll find logs to fill it with some day, but for now it’s a big improvement over the screen!

  1. Okay, share some other fireplace filler ideas. The logs look awesome, but having a pile of wood in the fireplace in a house that has previously had termites is a bad idea….
