The Joys of an Old House

We love living in a house built in 1939, but there are some things we’d really like to update. Every spring and fall we have to take down the storm windows and put up the screens. I can’t complain too much, because the house I grew up in was old and the windows didn’t even open. So the fact that we are able to open the windows and enjoy a breeze is huge.

Here are the windows with the storms up:

Here are the windows with the screens. They aren’t painted green, which most people probably don’t notice, but I do. But it’s one of those things that is probably not worth taking the time to paint them. At least not this year!

Since this is the second time we’ve put the screens up, it’s getting easier. But one of these years we’re hoping to invest in new windows…

  1. New windows are totally worth the investment! Gerard and I noticed about a $50 decrease from last year’s comparable month (this Jan. and Jan. 2010) Our MidAmerican monthly budgeting bill has gone down and our house is a lot more soundproof. For us, it was worth dipping into savings a little bit for the long term benefits. :)
