Desk varnish

The Wendy Peffercorn of Projects

“I’ve been coming here every summer of my adult life, and every summer there she is oiling and lotioning, lotioning and oiling… smiling. I can’t take this no more!”

Forget Goonies or Ghostbusters the iconic film of my childhood was hands down The Sandlot.  Maybe it was because I was an awkward red headed kid playing right field or the sheer number of great one liners but this film resonated through out my childhood and now somehow I’ve found myself quoting it again as I stare at our beloved epically long desk project.

I walk into the kitchen workshop muttering, ‘there she sits, sanding and varnishing, varnishing and sanding, I can’t take anymore!’

desk varnishLucky for me, my husband is far more patient!  So he sands and I sit trying my hardest not to ask too many ‘are you done yet’ type of questions, what a good man.

What about you, what are your favorite moments from the Sandlot? (‘Smalls want a s’more?’) Or were you more of a Goonies or Beatlejuice Fan?  Am I the only one who seems to be having these childhood memories resurface in the midst of a project?

And for those of you who aren’t familiar with The Sandlot you simply must check out the scene from above! It will take you back to those delightfully awkward years before you had the courage or the cool to talk to the opposite sex.

  1. Oh, the Sandlot! A couple of one liners that have stayed in my vocabulary since then might be:
“Remember kid, there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die, follow your heart kid, and you’ll never go wrong. ”
    And
“It’s about time Benny, my clothes are going out of style. ”

and the desk is coming along beautifully! It will be worth it.
