Window Shopping

by Andrea Cooley

I love the original woodwork on our windows (not the original windows, but that’s another post), but they look a little bare. I’ve been thinking about hanging curtains in the living room for awhile, but haven’t been able to commit to any. Does anyone else feel like they can find good ideas and pretty prints but when it comes to pulling the trigger and actually making a decision and putting something in your house and living with it I’m paralyzed by all the options. I start to second guess myself. What if I make the wrong choice? What if I spend money on something and it’s ugly, or I hate it, or it’s not “right”?

That’s where you come in! Help me pick curtains! Here are my requirements:

  • I’d love to incorporate pattern, but it has to pass the husband test.
  • I’m leaning toward something semi-sheer. We don’t get a ton of light in the living room, so I don’t want to cover up the windows too much.
  • I think I prefer a grommet top.
  • I need 4 panels, and I don’t want to spend a fortune. Ideally my budget is $100, but I could be convinced to spend $150 for the right curtains.

I’ve been doing most of my shopping online, so here’s what I’ve narrowed it down to:

World Market

West Elm

Target Full disclosure: I actually have one of these curtains (the blue and brown) draped over my sofa right now, but Adam’s not thrilled with it and I’m not convinced I love it.

What do you think? Any other suggestions? I feel like I’ve looked everywhere, but maybe I’m missing a good source for curtains. I’ve bought the curtain rods (those were much easier to choose!). But I don’t want to hang them until I have curtains!

  1. I like the World Market and West Elm ones best!

I ended up making my own curtains, after searching for something that was cute & affordable, but that endeavor was more expensive than expected and now I don’t love the result. :-( But if you’re going for something more sheer that won’t need to be lined, that could be an option!

    • Thanks for chiming in Brianne, I’ve totally been down that route before! I think ‘i can do that for 12 cents’ when really by the time the project is finished it cost more than I ever would have imagined, glad I’m not alone.

  2. I am surprised at how much I really like the JC Penney ones! Normally, the West Elm would be my favorite.

  3. I agree with Emily! I surprisingly like the JCP panels… The West Elm ones are cute too, but maybe a little thick/heavy?

I really like the JC Penney ones -pretty, and they’d look great with the woodwork. They look subtle to me…crazy? Nah. (Lowes is my 2nd choice). Good luck deciding!

  5. Love the jcp ones too… I think Adam will come to love them! Or at least not be bothered by them!!
